More than 400 kinds of bird have been recorded in Bermuda, which is remarkable for such a small island. Only a couple of dozen live and breed here all year; most are visitors passing through on migration or spending the winter, and many have turned up only a handful of times.

You don't need to go far: our cottages sit right on the water at Sugar Cane Point, and plenty of birds visit the garden, the lawn, the sea wall and the rocks around Mangrove Bay. For the best birding spots further afield, see National Parks & Nature Reserves.

White-tailed tropicbird

Autumn migration: expect the unexpected

Bermuda lies alone in the Atlantic, about 1,000 km (650 miles) off the coast of North Carolina, beneath the Atlantic flyway, the great migration route along the eastern side of North America. Every autumn, roughly September to November, millions of birds head south, and some, like the blackpoll warbler, fly straight out over the ocean.

Strong westerly winds behind cold fronts, and tropical storms and hurricanes, carry warblers, shorebirds, herons, falcons and other birds of prey far out to sea. Many of them make landfall in Bermuda, tired and hungry. That is why the island's list is so long, and why you can sometimes find quite unusual birds here, especially in the days after a storm has passed.

Spring migration (roughly March to May) is quieter, but brings colourful warblers in breeding plumage, while the longtails are already back on the cliffs, having arrived in February.

Winter visitors (about November to March) include ducks on the ponds, gulls, belted kingfishers along the shore, and warblers such as the yellow-rumped and palm warblers that stay for the winter.

Bermuda's own birds

Bermuda petrel
Bermuda petrel Pterodroma cahowNovember to June, at sea and on the nesting islandsEndemic: breeds only in Bermuda.Photo: Nodnarb Nedloh (CC BY-SA)

The Bermuda petrel, or cahow, is Bermuda's national bird and is found nowhere else. It was thought to be extinct for nearly 300 years until it was rediscovered in 1951, and careful conservation since then has brought it back from the brink. It nests only on small protected islands and spends the rest of its life at sea, so you are unlikely to see one from land.

The white-eyed vireo in Bermuda is a subspecies found only here, known locally as the "chick-of-the-village" after its song. Several other birds that once lived only in Bermuda, including a hawk, an owl, a flicker and a night-heron, are long extinct and known only from bones.

The cahow, the white-eyed vireo, the longtail and the common tern are all specially protected under the Protected Species Act 2003.

Full checklist of the birds of Bermuda

All 409 species on the list, in taxonomic order and grouped by family. Type a name to search, or filter by how often the bird is seen. Birds marked Seen around the cottages are ones our guests are likely to spot at Watford Studios.

Endemic found only in Bermuda (a species, or a Bermuda subspecies). Native breeder a native bird that nests in Bermuda. Specially protected listed at Level 1 in the Protected Species Order 2012, made under the Protected Species Act 2003. Introduced brought to Bermuda by people. Pest bird: not protected one of the few birds named as pests in the Schedule to the Protection of Birds Act 1975.
Every other wild bird in Bermuda is protected by law under the Protection of Birds Act 1975, so please enjoy them from a distance and never disturb a nest.
